The IHS trigram is an abbreviation for ΙΗΣΟΥΣ (IESOUS) in ancient Greek. Over the centuries it became IHC, or JHC. Later in the Latin alphabet the Σ was replaced by an H and the C brought to S. In the Middle Ages the symbol was spread by San Bernardino of Siena and then adopted by Saint Ignatius of Loyola as a symbol of the company of Jesus: IESUS HOMINUM SALVATOR - Jesus savior of men. Today IHS is the irrefutable symbol of Our Lord.
